Stubborn Loyalty and the Dangerous Grip of Political Acolytes on Pakistan

Date:

The world’s perception of Pakistan is being significantly impacted by the recent political transformation in the country. Political Acolytes are holding their dangerous grip with their stubborn loyalty to their favorite political leaders and are damaging the democratic values of Pakistan.  Political acolytes can be defined as individuals who display an unchecked devotion to their political leaders, parties, ideologies, or any other form of fanaticism. These are the blind and obstinate followers who regard their leaders as infallible, often overlooking any wrongdoing, whether personal or as a leader. In Pakistan, this trend is getting a hype day by day and we as a nation are worried for the future of Pakistan’s politics. This phenomenon has not only impacted the progress of the country but also deepened its political and social divisions. The question arises, why do these political acolytes remain so stubborn in their beliefs, despite overwhelming evidence of corruption and poor governance?

There are several factors that contribute to the suborn loyalty of political acolytes in Pakistan. These factors are somehow embedded in the social, political and economic systems making the phenomenon complex and dangerous. Among which the key driver is the blind followership of charismatic leaders. These charismatic leaders often incorporate such narratives into the minds of general public that they are not just a political figure, they are here as a gift of God and as a symbol of hope and change.

Being popular on social media is also one of a very touchy factor that can convince the general public by touching their emotional and psychological approach towards Pakistan. Those political leaders who get publicity on their social media platforms are tend to be popular and regardless of what wrong they are saying, they get the public attention and people start becoming their fans, start blindly following them as a social pressure.

According to a June 2023 survey by Gallup Pakistan, 77% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the country’s current arc. However, many continue to act as stubborn acolytes, prioritizing loyalty to individuals over ideology or policy. This contradiction raises a crucial question: Why there is a sense of dissatisfaction if you are blindly and stubbornly supporting and voting for your favorite political leaders? The real issue lies in the lack of accountability; leaders of the acolytes are not questioned for their wrongdoings but are blindly worshiped. This can lead to dangerous outcomes for future politics of Pakistan.

Pakistan

Pakistan’s rising economic crisis is deeply troubling, and it cannot be managed as long as leaders are followed without question. Party loyalists justify every blunder of their leaders and tag it as a conspiracy against their favorite political leader or his party. Pakistan is going into debts yet political parties are continuously making unrealistic promises without addressing the main issues and acolytes are even not letting general public ask about it. According to them, external factors made their leaders do the things rather than poor policy decisions.

Socially, the situation is even dark. These individuals keep on fighting with their peers and keep on arguing on baseless claims and hence end up losing their worthy relationships. The problem is that they don’t allow anyone to have a different opinion. They engage in endless fights and arguments, devoid of logic, merely to assert that their political leader is the best and that the entire world is against them.

The Pakistani nation is known for its deep emotional connection to religion, which often becomes a powerful driving force in their daily lives and decision-making. This strong emotional attachment to faith makes them particularly vulnerable to manipulation. Political leaders, aware of this, exploit this psychological aspect by framing their personal interests around religious beliefs and values, often invoking Islam to gain trust and support. These leaders craft narratives that appeal to the religious sentiments of the people, positioning themselves as defenders of faith and champions of religious causes.

As a result, these devoted followers, often referred to as acolytes, begin to see their political leaders not just as ordinary politicians, but as figures who are divinely chosen or blessed. They perceive them as representatives of the Almighty, assuming that their actions and decisions are in alignment with the will of God. This belief creates an unwavering loyalty, as these followers come to view their leaders as infallible and sinless, above reproach. Any criticism or opposition to these leaders is then seen as an attack on their emotions, further solidifying the leaders’ control over their followers.

Rather than strengthening the democracy, these political acolytes enforce their respective party narratives by attacking opponents, spreading misinformation, rejecting elections, always being on road and staying silent when accused of wrong doings. For the literal progress of Pakistan, the nation must break free from the grip of these political acolytes and think about their coming generations and mainly for Pakistan first. Pakistan’s survival depends upon being fair and just. Until the country overcomes this dangerous culture, real progress will remain an illusion.
