POLICY WIRE — England’s national football team has advanced to the World Cup semi-finals after securing a 2-1 victory over Norway in a quarter-final match that extended into extra time, according to The Independent. The decisive goal was scored by Jude Bellingham, propelling the Three Lions into their second semi-final appearance in the last three World Cups.
The match, described as a tense encounter, concluded with a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of regular play. Bellingham then netted the winning goal just three minutes into the extra half-an-hour, capitalizing on a rebound from Norway’s goalkeeper Orjan Nyland’s spill, The Independent reported. Following this victory, England is set to face either Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-final on Wednesday evening, July 15, at The Atlanta Stadium, also known as the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Despite the win, England boss Thomas Tuchel expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance, describing his side as “lucky,” according to The Independent. However, numerous public figures and celebrities took to social media to offer their congratulations and praise to the England squad.
Sir David Beckham, who had visited the England squad during training in Miami earlier in the week, shared photos and videos from the match in the United States on his Instagram stories. He accompanied these posts with the caption: “Brilliant from the lads.” His wife, Victoria Beckham, also shared a family photograph featuring herself, Beckham, and their children Romeo, 23, Cruz, 21, and Harper, 15, taken at the Hard Rock Stadium. She wrote: “Special moment tonight in Miami with my family and for our country.”
Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, whose song “Wonderwall” has become an unofficial anthem for England during the tournament, conveyed his desire for the team to win the World Cup trophy. On X/Twitter, the musician wrote: We’re winning this WC I don’t know how don’t care respect to all those players manager you gotta make it happen LG.
Musician Billy Idol, known for his hit “Dancing with Myself,” admitted that the England team had tested his nerves during the match. He stated that the game was “really close” until Bellingham’s intervention. Idol added: “Norway played really well we were lucky in some ways,” — and “I was on the edge of my seat!”
Prince William also extended his congratulations, re-sharing a celebratory graphic from the official England account. He wrote: “Top performance in a tough environment. This is a special team. Commiserations to a proud Norway team. Onto the semi final… Never in doubt!” Separately, Piers Morgan specifically lauded England manager Tuchel, dubbing him “a natural-born winner who refuses to accept anything but the best,” The Independent reported.
Across Britain, pubs reportedly erupted in celebration as England secured their place in the next stage of the tournament. The team now has three days before their World Cup semi-final match.
