Richmond Man Arrested After Smashed Windshields of 81 Cars in VCU Medical Center Lot

POLICY WIRE — Richmond, USA — A 33-year-old man is in custody after allegedly embarking on a destructive spree that left dozens of vehicles shattered in a Richmond parking lot.

Tyler Holtrust faces one felony charge and eight misdemeanor counts of destruction of property. He is accused of using a brick to smash the windows and windshields of 81 different cars on Tuesday.

While initial reports suggested the damage may have extended to more than 90 vehicles, authorities noted that Holtrust could still face further charges as the investigation continues.

Richmond Police were dispatched to the intersection of Ambler and East Grace streets in the Shockoe Bottom district shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday. The location is situated near Main Street Station.

Officers apprehended Holtrust, who is reported to be homeless, without any incident.

Sydney Lee, a witness to the arrest, told WWBT that she saw the suspect being handcuffed and placed in an ambulance.

Lee noted that she did not realize the scale of the damage until she parked her own car and saw the windshield of the vehicle ahead of her was gone, followed by a long line of similarly destroyed cars.

The parking lot is primarily used by staff from the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.

According to Virginia Statewide Incidents LLC, investigators are collaborating with VCU Police to track down all affected owners. Those who were impacted were alerted via flyers placed on their vehicles.

Laura Lee, a long-time employee of the medical center, discovered her windshield had been smashed on Tuesday.

“It’s just a headache to have to deal with, but I’m just thankful that no one got hurt,” Lee told WWBT.

The incident left many drivers stranded and questioning how such a large-scale attack occurred without immediate intervention.

Lee expressed frustration over the security measures, stating, I wish that the surveillance here was a little bit better. I think 100 vehicles is kind of a lot to get vandalized without anyone catching it.

Some VCU staff members reported a lack of prompt communication, with some claiming they were not notified for several hours and others saying they received no notice at all.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist victims with repair costs, as some drivers reported that their insurance policies would not cover the full extent of the damage.

The Richmond Police Department and VCU Medical Center were contacted for comment by The Independent.
