James Hagerty, the town administrator of Edgartown, confirmed that emergency services arrived at the scene around 1:40 p.m. following reports of the incident. The woman’s wounds are consistent with those inflicted by a marine animal, though no shark was sighted.

Hagerty reassured the public that the woman’s injuries, while serious, are not life-threatening and do not involve the loss of a limb. As a precaution, South Beach was closed to swimmers for several hours while officials evaluated the safety conditions.
