POLICY WIRE — Hong Kong, China — Hong Kong authorities are facing mounting pressure to review the existing warning system for heat stress at workplaces after the lowest-level alert remained in effect on Sunday, despite the city experiencing its hottest day on record.

Labour unionists, in conjunction with a leading meteorologist, have called for a revision of the current system. They also proposed a legislative change to recognize heatstroke as a work-related injury, thereby entitling affected workers to compensation.

The Hong Kong Observatory in Tsim Sha Tsui recorded a scorching 36.9 degrees Celsius (98.4 Fahrenheit), marking an unprecedented high for the region.
