McDonald’s Faces Fan Backlash Over New Disney-Themed Halloween Boo Buckets
McDonald’s celebrates 40 years of Boo Buckets with a Disney villain collaboration, but fans express disappointment over the design and lack of classic lids.
POLICY WIRE — Chicago, USA — McDonald’s is marking the 40th anniversary of its iconic Halloween Boo Buckets with a fresh Disney collaboration, though the move has sparked significant frustration among long-time enthusiasts.
The fast-food giant announced that this year’s limited-edition pails will feature famous Disney antagonists, including Ursula from The Little Mermaid, Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Scar from The Lion King, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, and Jafar from Aladdin. These buckets, which include stickers and lids adorned with the McDonald’s arches, are scheduled to launch on October 20.
The decision to pivot away from the traditional ghost, pumpkin, and witch designs has drawn sharp criticism on social media. Many customers expressed disappointment that the company ignored widespread calls to bring back the original bucket lids, with some users on Instagram labeling the new designs as uninspired and lacking a true Halloween aesthetic.
One critic questioned the choice of Disney villains, while others noted they would be skipping the promotion entirely in favor of the classic designs they had hoped to see return. Despite previous collaborations with franchises like Scooby-Doo and Mr. Potato Head, the current reception highlights a disconnect between the brand’s marketing strategy and the nostalgia-driven expectations of its customer base.
The Boo Buckets are sold as part of a Happy Meal, which offers a choice of a hamburger, four-piece Chicken McNuggets, or six-piece Chicken McNuggets, accompanied by fries, apple slices, and a drink. The promotion will remain available only while supplies last.
First introduced in 1986, the Monster Boo Buckets have seen sporadic releases over the decades, with notable comebacks in 2016 and 2022. Last year’s iteration featured traditional pumpkin, ghost, and zombie themes alongside new black cat and witch variations.
