Iranian Revolutionary Guards Strike Tanker in Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Revolutionary Guards confirm a strike on a supertanker in the Strait of Hormuz after the vessel allegedly ignored warnings and disabled transponders.
POLICY WIRE — Tehran, Iran — Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reported on Monday, October 12, 2026, that they successfully struck a vessel attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz. This critical maritime chokepoint remains a focal point of regional tensions.
According to an official statement released via the Sepah News platform, the targeted ship was a supertanker that caught fire following the engagement. The Guards asserted that the vessel had attempted to transit the area while disabling its transponders and failing to heed repeated warnings from their naval forces.
The incident follows a weekend warning from Ali Ozmaei, the naval commander for the Guards. He had explicitly stated that any ship attempting to bypass detection by turning off its transponder would be classified as hostile and met with a severe military response.
The Strait of Hormuz has been under an Iranian blockade since February 2026, following the commencement of strikes against the Islamic republic by the United States and Israel. This ongoing conflict in West Asia has led to a reciprocal U.S. counter-blockade of Iranian ports and frequent U.S. naval escorts for vessels moving through the region.
Since the outbreak of the war, the Revolutionary Guards have regularly targeted ships attempting to traverse the strait without prior authorization. Reporting by Policy-Wire (PW)
