POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The UK new car market experienced its eighth consecutive month of growth, with 156,571 new cars registered last month, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The surge is primarily driven by the increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs).
The SMMT reported a significant rise in EV registrations, contributing substantially to the overall growth. This trend underscores the shifting consumer preferences towards more sustainable transportation options.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, stated, “The continued growth in the new car market is a positive sign for the industry. The rising demand for EVs reflects the broader transition towards greener automotive solutions.”
The data indicates a 12.3% increase in EV registrations compared to the same period last year. This growth is part of a larger trend where EVs are becoming increasingly popular among UK consumers.
The automotive industry is responding to this demand with expanded offerings — and incentives for EV purchases. Government policies — and incentives are also playing a crucial role in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.
Despite the positive growth, challenges remain. Supply chain issues and semiconductor shortages continue to impact production and delivery timelines for new cars, including EVs.
The SMMT’s report highlights the need for continued investment in EV infrastructure and support for the automotive industry to sustain this growth trajectory.
