McDonald’s Disney Villain Boo Buckets Spark Backlash From Nostalgic Fans
McDonald's brings back Halloween Boo Buckets with a Disney villain twist for their 40th anniversary, leaving some nostalgic fans disappointed.
POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — McDonald’s is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its iconic Halloween Boo Buckets through a partnership with Disney, though the update has drawn mixed reactions from dedicated customers.
To mark four decades of the limited-edition seasonal promotion, the fast-food giant replaced traditional holiday designs with packaging highlighting famous Disney antagonists.
The upcoming lineup includes Ursula from The Little Mermaid, Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Scar from The Lion King, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, and Jafar from Aladdin.
Scheduled to debut on October 20, each bucket will be packaged with stickers and a lid stamped with the traditional McDonald’s arches, moving away from past plastic configurations.
While previous iterations have showcased television and film favorites like Scooby-Doo and Mr. Potato Head, social media users expressed frustration over the latest creative direction.
Beyond the choice of characters, numerous patrons voiced annoyance that the corporation omitted the original style of plastic lids that advocates had actively campaigned to bring back.
Critics also took to digital platforms to argue that the selected Disney antagonists lack a direct thematic connection to the Halloween holiday.
Social media complaints ranged from expressions of complete disappointment to declarations that customers would skip the seasonal offering entirely in favor of traditional designs.
Disappointed patrons flooded official channels with comments questioning why the company chose Disney villains for a milestone celebration, with several noting they had hoped for the original buckets with lids.
The seasonal items are distributed through Happy Meal purchases, which offer a choice between a hamburger, a four-piece Chicken McNuggets, or a six-piece Chicken McNuggets alongside apple slices, fries, and a beverage.
Management confirmed that the limited-edition pails will remain available exclusively while supplies last at participating locations.
Originally introduced in 1986 as Monster Boo Buckets, the seasonal collectibles have returned intermittently over the decades, following official revivals in 2016 and 2022.
The previous year’s release relied on traditional pumpkin, ghost, and zombie layouts while adding black cat and witch variations to the rotation.
