Decade-Old West Virginia Cold Case Leads to Arrest Following Dispute Over Bandana
Authorities have arrested 65-year-old Richard William Nichols for the 2016 murder of Ivan Perlis in West Virginia, ending a decade-long investigation.
POLICY WIRE — Maysville, West Virginia — A long-standing mystery surrounding the 2016 death of 25-year-old Ivan “Vanya” Perlis has reached a turning point with the arrest of 65-year-old Richard William Nichols.
Nichols was apprehended in Indiana last month and subsequently extradited to West Virginia to face charges related to the homicide. The case dates back to November 12, 2016, when a hunter discovered human remains near Maysville.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the West Virginia State Police, the victim’s skull exhibited three distinct bullet wounds in the back. A medical examiner concluded that Perlis had been killed approximately one month prior to the discovery of his remains.
Investigators initially centered their inquiry on a confrontation between the two men regarding a bandana. Police reports indicate that Nichols had accused Perlis of stealing the item and utilizing his camper, an incident that allegedly escalated into a physical altercation where Nichols grabbed Perlis by the neck.
While Nichols claimed in 2017 that the pair had reconciled, his statements to law enforcement remained inconsistent over the years. He provided varying accounts, including a claim that he had driven Perlis to meet an unidentified individual who allegedly threatened them both with a firearm.
In a written apology to the victim’s family, Nichols maintained that he had provided Perlis with a ride and expressed regret that he had not done more to assist him. However, the investigation remained active for nearly a decade.
A breakthrough occurred in July 2024 when the owner of the property where both men resided provided new testimony. The witness reported seeing the pair depart together, with Nichols returning later in different attire, allegedly claiming he had changed because his clothes were bloodied and that Perlis would not be returning.
Authorities are also exploring a potential motive linked to a separate burglary. Investigators suspect Nichols may have sought to silence Perlis to prevent him from identifying other individuals involved in that crime.
Nichols is currently being held in a West Virginia jail as he awaits his upcoming court appearance. Reporting by Policy-Wire (PW)
