POLICY WIRE — Jakarta, Indonesia — Thousands of residents on Indonesia’s Flores Island are still awaiting aid after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the region, resulting in at least 54 fatalities, 135 injuries, and the destruction of more than 1,300 homes. The disaster has cast a shadow over Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations.
The earthquake, which hit on August 17, has left many communities in urgent need of assistance. Local authorities and international aid organizations are working to distribute essential supplies, including food, water, and medical aid, to the affected areas.
“The situation is dire. We are doing everything we can to reach those in need, but the scale of the disaster is overwhelming,” said an official from the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB).
The tremors were felt across multiple provinces, causing widespread panic and leading to significant structural damage. Rescue teams continue to search through the rubble for survivors, though hopes are fading as time passes.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and assured the public that the government is committed to providing all necessary support. “This is a tragic event, and our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of all affected citizens,” he stated during a press conference.
International aid has begun to pour in, with neighboring countries and global organizations offering assistance. The United Nations has activated its emergency response teams, and several countries have pledged financial and material support.
The disaster has also highlighted the vulnerability of the region to seismic activity. Flores Island, part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of the earthquake, the focus remains on providing immediate relief to those affected and beginning the long process of recovery and reconstruction.
