American Airlines Flight Diverted to Baltimore After Violent Passenger Restrained with Duct Tape

POLICY WIRE — Fort Worth, USA — An American Airlines journey from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark was forced to make an emergency landing in Baltimore late Thursday night following a violent incident involving a disruptive passenger.

The airline confirmed the diversion on Friday, noting that the flight was interrupted by the passenger’s behavior.

Witnesses Richard Olenick and Juan Mejia, a retired law enforcement officer, reported that the situation escalated roughly two hours into the trip.

Mejia described the shift as sudden, stating, Just like a light switch, all of a sudden, it went from quiet to yelling and chaos.

According to Mejia, he looked back to find the man assaulting the passenger in the aisle seat by grabbing him around the neck.

Sitting two rows ahead of the commotion, Olenick and Mejia intervened to help the crew restrain the individual.

The pair utilized duct tape and zip ties supplied by a flight attendant to secure the man.

A photograph provided by Olenick depicts the suspect strapped into his seat with several layers of tape encircling his head, torso, and wrists.

Witnesses alleged that the man directed homophobic remarks and a racial slur toward a flight attendant who had tried to de-escalate the conflict.

The subsequent turn toward violence led the crew to restrain the man and divert the aircraft.

The flight eventually proceeded to its Newark destination after law enforcement removed the suspect from the aircraft.

In an official statement, American Airlines emphasized that violence is not tolerated and that the security of their staff and passengers remains their primary concern.

The airline added, We thank our team members for their professionalism and our customers for their understanding.

The FBI is now interviewing witnesses to establish the facts of the case.

Federal authorities will coordinate with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland to decide if federal charges are warranted.

The identity of the suspect has not been released by authorities.
