POLICY WIRE — Miami, United States — A fatal plane crash at Miami International Airport left five people dead after an Amazon cargo jet overshot the runway, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The Boeing 767, operated by 21 Air, was en route from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was carrying mostly contact lenses when it crashed into a van belonging to a plane cleaning company. Five workers were killed in the impact, including Rolando Aleman Leon, Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, Julio C. Pineda, Carlos Acosta Fajardo, and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo.

Cockpit voice recordings obtained by the NTSB reveal that one of the pilots warned they were going too fast for landing, with additional comments about the aircraft’s speed throughout the recording. The pilot called for a go-around just 15 seconds before the audio ended, but the plane overran the runway by approximately 1,300 feet, crashing into the van and later striking an SUV before catching fire. Two injured workers remained in critical condition.
