Fed Governor Cook’s Lawyer Challenges Trump’s Probe into Mortgage Allegations
Fed Governor Lisa Cook's lawyer questions White House probe's objectivity over mortgage fraud claims. Trump seeks to remove her from central bank.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook will be unavailable for a scheduled hearing on November 5 regarding allegations of mortgage fraud, according to her attorney, who has raised concerns about the impartiality of the White House-led investigation.
Cook’s legal representative, Abbe Lowell, stated in a letter to the White House that she will be engaged in official duties during the proposed date, including policy meetings in Europe. He emphasized that she cannot attend the hearing on that day and suggested that the earliest possible session would occur after the Fed’s December 8-9 policy meeting.
The hearing is part of a broader effort by President Donald Trump to remove Cook from the central bank, following his previous unsuccessful attempt to oust her. The committee assembled by Trump includes key figures such as Kevin Hassett, who has previously expressed support for removing Cook. Lowell criticized the panel’s composition and questioned its legitimacy, calling the process an unfair challenge to her independence.
