POLICY WIRE — Punta Gorda, Florida — A 47-year-old man from Punta Gorda has been charged with aggravated battery after allegedly slashing an elderly shopper’s face with a box cutter at a Publix store, police said.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the suspect, Ramsey Thomas Lyons, reportedly approached a 70-year-old man in one of the aisles and struck him with a box cutter. The victim described feeling a sharp pain on his left cheek before turning around to see Lyons holding the weapon.
Lyons told officers he had an undiagnosed mental illness and claimed the victim appeared to be from the “1960’s era.” He stated he intended to kill someone and that the elderly man “looked like he was from the 1960’s” and felt like “acing him out.” After the alleged attack, he dropped the box cutter down the aisle, according to police reports.
