Carly Rae Jepsen Opens Up on Motherhood, Marriage, and Her Latest Musical Projects
Pop star Carly Rae Jepsen discusses her new album Day and Night, her recent marriage to Cole MGN, and writing music for a Broadway adaptation.
POLICY WIRE — Los Angeles, USA — Pop artist Carly Rae Jepsen is entering a transformative chapter of her life, balancing the release of her most acclaimed album to date, Day and Night, with the joys of new motherhood and a high-profile Broadway collaboration.
Jepsen, who married producer Cole Marsden Greif-Neill—professionally known as Cole MGN—last year, recently welcomed their son, Ilya. The couple chose the name after watching the Canadian hockey drama Heated Rivalry, a show Jepsen admits she binged while feeling hormonal and happy during her pregnancy.
The pair’s relationship is deeply intertwined with their creative work. They first met during a 2021 songwriting session and have since collaborated on tracks like So Right and No Labels, I Love You. Their wedding took place at the historic Chelsea Hotel in New York, a venue that holds significant sentimental value for the couple.
During the ceremony, their friend and collaborator Rufus Wainwright surprised the guests with an a cappella performance of Leonard Cohen’s Chelsea Hotel No 2. Jepsen described the moment as the highlight of the event, noting that the surprise left many of the 100 attendees in tears.
Beyond her personal milestones, Jepsen is currently in New York for a five-week stint working alongside Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang. The team is developing a musical adaptation of the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You, a project Jepsen finds both topical and exciting.
Reflecting on her career, Jepsen noted that Day and Night represents her most liberated work yet. She credits her recent personal stability and the support of her collaborators for allowing her to approach her music with newfound confidence and creative freedom.
