Oregon Elementary School Shooting: Heroic Teacher and Armed Parent Intervened to Stop Teen Gunman
A 16-year-old former student killed four at an Oregon elementary school before being stopped by an armed parent. Read the latest on the tragic shooting.
POLICY WIRE — Bend, Oregon — A teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School is being credited with saving lives after she threw her phone at a teenage gunman and engaged in a physical struggle with him during a deadly attack on October 16, 2026. The assailant, identified as 16-year-old former student Griffin J. John II, was ultimately neutralized by a parent who followed him into the building.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz described the teacher’s actions as heroic, noting that she survived the encounter without injury. The shooter, who had previously participated in a special needs program at the school, targeted a classroom for students with special needs, firing approximately 15 rounds from a 12-gauge shotgun before being killed with 44 rounds still in his possession.
The tragedy claimed the lives of three children, aged 5, 8, and 11, as well as 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert. Another 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher, identified by family as Becky Drury, remain in critical condition following the incident, which marks the 28th mass killing in the United States this year.
Investigators are currently working to determine how the teenager obtained the weapon, though a law enforcement official indicated the shotgun was purchased by the suspect’s mother, Shauntai Nickerson. Under Oregon law, minors are permitted to possess shotguns if provided by a parent or with parental consent.
The sequence of events began when a driver in a red pickup truck witnessed the suspect climbing a fence and alerted authorities after the teen fired at his vehicle. A second driver, a 36-year-old father of students at the school, intervened by entering the building with his own .40-caliber pistol and shooting the attacker during his struggle with the teacher.
President Donald Trump addressed the incident from the White House, praising the armed parent as a hero for his intervention. Meanwhile, the suspect’s mother expressed deep remorse to reporters, stating she wished she could have prevented the violence that devastated the local community.
