POLICY WIRE — Atlanta, United States — Friends, family, and educational staff are grieving the loss of a 42-year-old man who suffered a fatal fall Monday from a thrill ride at Six Flags Over Georgia.
According to eyewitness accounts, Hassan Kariem was thrown from The Goliath roller coaster and impacted other riders during his descent.
Kariem worked as an IT manager within the Atlanta Public Schools network, which issued a statement remembering him as a cherished member of the school community whose presence and impact will be deeply missed.
Wesley International Academy, an Atlanta charter school where Kariem spent more than 12 years, characterized him as a beloved colleague, friend, and integral part of the Wesley family.
Throughout his tenure at Wesley, Mr. Kariem served as our IT manager, a technology teacher, and a robotics coach, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues, the institution noted.
Relatives shared with local news outlets that he was a dedicated educator who had previously triumphed over two separate battles with cancer alongside surviving a severe automobile collision. They confirmed he visited the amusement park alongside relatives when the fatal incident unfolded.
Park patrons Vanessa and Fred Sowemimo, who had just exited the exact same attraction, recounted witnessing Kariem fly out of his seat.
Fred Sowemimo noted that surrounding visitors panicked immediately, with some breaking down in tears.
There was a young lady who had blood all over her white skirt, and it was in that moment, at least for me, I realized that this actually did happen, he explained.
State regulators alongside the attraction’s builder, Bolliger & Mabillard, have launched formal inquiries into the event. Six Flags responded by halting operations on Goliath, alongside nine comparable attractions spread across six distinct properties, noting the shutdowns were executed out of an abundance of caution according to a company representative.
The Mako roller coaster located at SeaWorld Orlando, which shares the same manufacturer in Bolliger & Mabillard, likewise ceased operations as a preventative measure.
Theme park safety specialist Matthew Miller explained that these suspensions serve as a brief pause to evaluate findings from the ongoing investigation prior to resuming standard operations as quickly as possible.
For the Sowemimos, feelings of personal safety are accompanied by profound sorrow for the victim’s relatives.
Someone did not go home yesterday, and I just want to say to pray for them, Vanessa Sowemimo stated. Just pray for these people who were truly impacted.
Manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard expressed deep sorrow regarding the tragic event, offering condolences to the family and impacted individuals. Six Flags similarly expressed deep grief while emphasizing its full cooperation with investigating authorities.
