EU Boosts Migration Cooperation with Eastern Libya Through €25M Funding
EU allocates €25M to expand migration efforts in eastern Libya, focusing on border control and anti-smuggling operations.
POLICY WIRE — Brussels, Europe — The European Union has announced a new €25 million ($29 million) funding package to strengthen migration management in eastern Libya, according to a letter from Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to EU leaders.
The financial injection aims to enhance border control, search-and-rescue missions, and anti-smuggling initiatives in the region. This move reflects the EU’s growing reliance on eastern Libyan authorities, led by military commander Khalifa Haftar, to manage migration flows across the Mediterranean.
The funding comes as the EU prepares to implement its new Pact on Migration and Asylum, set to take effect on 16 June. Despite concerns over human rights and violence at sea, the EU continues to deepen its partnership with eastern Libya, reinforcing its strategic role in regional migration policy.
