POLICY WIRE — Tirana, Albania — Flames erupted inside Albania’s Education Ministry on Wednesday as student-led demonstrations in the capital entered a second consecutive day, according to local media reports. Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the ministry building to protest against corruption and the state of the nation’s educational system.
Law enforcement responded by deploying tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds in Tirana. Some participants in the protests hurled bricks directly at the government building.
According to the Albanian news outlet Shekulli, the demonstration swelled on Wednesday at around 11 am local time, drawing larger crowds than the previous day. Certain individuals managed to climb over the exterior security walls, breaching the ministry grounds.
Thick black smoke and visible flames were subsequently spotted emanating from a second-floor window of the Ministry of Education and Sports compound. Security perimeters were heavily tested as hundreds of student demonstrators confronted riot police amid ongoing social tensions.
