MI5 Chief Denies Russia’s Brexit Interference Impact Despite PM’s Claims
MI5 chief says Brexit result 'not in dispute' as claims of Russian interference resurface. Verified facts and official statements analyzed.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The head of MI5 has stated that the outcome of the 2016 Brexit referendum remains unquestionable, even as the prime minister alleged Russian involvement in the vote.
Sir Ken McCallum, the director general of MI5, confirmed that Moscow attempted to influence the referendum through social media and television coverage. However, he emphasized that these actions did not alter the final result, which was decided by the British public.
McCallum also warned against amplifying Russian narratives, following recent comments from Andy Burnham about Moscow’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 vote. The security chief reiterated that while Russia frequently seeks to create divisions, its interference in the referendum had minimal impact on the outcome.
