Hurricane Simon Strikes Western Mexico as Tropical Systems Claim Six Lives
Six dead as Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel hit western Mexico with floods and landslides. Authorities warn of ongoing risks.
POLICY WIRE — Mexico City, Mexico — A deadly combination of Hurricane Simon and the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel has left six people dead in western Mexico, according to officials. The storm system has triggered widespread flooding and landslides along the Pacific coast, prompting emergency responses across multiple states.
Hurricane Simon, now classified as a Category 1 storm, continues to move slowly off Mexico’s Pacific coast, bringing heavy rainfall to Nayarit and Sinaloa. Earlier this week, it drenched Guerrero state, where one person was killed. The storm’s outer bands have caused significant damage near Puerto Vallarta, despite its eye remaining offshore.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that Simon, with sustained winds of 90 mph, is expected to maintain hurricane strength through Thursday before gradually weakening. In Baja California, floodwaters damaged homes and swept away vehicles, with four fatalities linked to the post-tropical cyclone Rachel. Rescue operations continue, including the evacuation of 32 individuals, many of whom were foreign visitors, from Ensenada.
