POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Walmart has reached a settlement with the U.S. government to resolve a lawsuit that accused the retail giant of contributing to the nationwide opioid epidemic through the unlawful dispensing of prescriptions at its pharmacies. The Department of Justice announced the agreement on Friday.

The specific terms of the settlement have not been disclosed. A spokesperson from the Justice Department expressed satisfaction with the resolution, stating that it addresses allegations of Walmart’s pharmacies failing to adhere to their obligations under the Controlled Substances Act when dispensing opioids and other controlled substances.

This settlement follows a previous agreement in 2022, where Walmart paid $3.1 billion to settle thousands of lawsuits from state and local governments regarding the role of its pharmacies in the opioid crisis. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 905,000 people died from opioid overdoses between 1999 and 2025.
