Legendary Voice Actor Peter Cullen, Known for Optimus Prime, Passes Away at 85

POLICY WIRE — Los Angeles, USA — Peter Cullen, the renowned voice actor celebrated for bringing life to Optimus Prime in the 1984 “Transformers” series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, has passed away. He was 85.

His agent, Kevin Motley, confirmed that Cullen died at his home in Los Angeles. The family released a statement asking the public to honor Cullen’s legacy by serving their communities with compassion, integrity, and loyalty, and to remember his famous quote, be strong enough to be gentle.

Cullen’s career was extensive, ranging from announcing for “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” to voice acting in “The Smurfs” and various G.I. Joe series. However, his portrayal of Optimus Prime left a significant mark on pop culture, leading to a toy line, spin-off series, and a multibillion-dollar film franchise.

Before auditioning for Optimus Prime, Cullen was unaware of the character’s details, only knowing he would be voicing a truck. His performance was inspired by his older brother, a U.S. Marine who served in the Vietnam War.

Cullen’s voice work extended beyond Transformers, including roles in “Winnie the Pooh” projects, “Knight Rider,” and King Kong. He also provided the clicking sounds for the alien creature in Predator.

Throughout his career, Cullen received numerous accolades, including a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023. He was also nominated for a Daytime Emmy for his work as Optimus Prime in 2011.

Cullen was known for his interactions with fans at conventions, often moved by the emotional responses he received. He is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar, and Clay.
