POLICY WIRE — Fullerton, USA — The No. 23 USC Trojans baseball team secured a dominant 9-2 victory over the Cal State Fullerton Titans on Tuesday night, effectively ending their recent five-game road trip and a four-game losing streak.
The Trojans showcased an impressive offensive display, securing a decisive win against the Titans. This crucial victory marked a significant turnaround for the team, concluding their extensive five-game road journey. Every player in the USC lineup recorded at least one hit, contributing to a remarkable total of 17 base hits, with six players achieving multi-hit performances.
Early Offensive Barrage Sets the Tone
The USC offense quickly asserted its dominance, putting pressure on the Titans‘ pitching staff from the outset. They explosively loaded the bases and then drove in four runs during the opening inning, cycling through their entire batting order and forcing an early pitching change for Fullerton after only one out was recorded.
The initial run came courtesy of a bases-loaded walk drawn by Kevin Takeuchi. Subsequently, Adrian Lopez crossed home plate after Fullerton right fielder Andrew Kirchner mishandled a fly ball. A two-RBI chopper hit into left field by Abbrie Covarrubias then concluded pitcher Nick Santivanez‘s short outing for Fullerton, leading to the introduction of their bullpen.
Freshman Pitcher Shines in Debut Start
Notably, freshman Diego Velazquez stepped onto the mound for his inaugural collegiate start for the Trojans. Having previously served as a bullpen arm and an infielder, Velazquez delivered a strong performance, pitching two innings, fanning four batters, and surrendering just one hit.
Fullerton managed to score their two runs in the third and fourth innings; Kirchner drove in the first with an RBI single, followed by a towering home run from Max Ortega in the fourth, his first of the season. However, USC quickly nullified these efforts, continuing to extend their lead.

Trojans Consolidate Lead and Pitching Dominance
USC further solidified its advantage in the fourth frame, as Takeuchi, who leads the team in both hits and batting average, delivered a two-RBI double. Later in the same inning, Maximo Martinez drove Takeuchi home with an RBI single hit to left field. The Trojans consistently built on their lead throughout the remaining innings.
In the sixth, a wild pitch that ricocheted off the backstop allowed Isaac Cadena to score. Covarrubias added another RBI in the ninth with a ground ball hit cleanly into left field. The Trojans deployed a total of seven pitchers, collectively limiting Fullerton to only six hits, marking their most effective pitching display since their encounter with Iowa on April 12.
Breaking the Losing Streak
This vital win comes on the heels of a challenging four-game losing streak, which included a disheartening three-game sweep by Nebraska where the Trojans were significantly outscored 36-15. This robust performance by USC could be the catalyst needed to rekindle the winning spirit that characterized their season before the critical UCLA series.
Upcoming Challenge: Purdue Boilermakers
Looking ahead, USC is set to host the Purdue Boilermakers for a three-game series at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles from April 24-26, with the first game on Friday at 7 p.m. PST. Purdue currently holds the third position in the Big Ten standings with an impressive 28-12 overall record and a 15-6 conference standing. In contrast, USC has dropped to fifth place, holding a 31-11 total record and a 13-8 mark within the Big Ten.
