Kyle Chandler Discusses Hal Jordan’s Intense Rivalry in HBO Max’s Lanterns

POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Kyle Chandler has delved into the intense rivalry at the core of HBO Max’s Lanterns, comparing his character Hal Jordan’s fear of relinquishing his power to an ‘AI-style threat’. Chandler, who plays the seasoned Green Lantern, is tasked with training his youthful replacement, John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre.

In the series, based on the DC comic book superhero, Hal Jordan is reluctant to pass the torch to John Stewart. This reluctance is highlighted in episode three, where John is approved to become the next Green Lantern after passing a test of bravery, unlike his father who failed the test as a baby.

Chandler, in an interview with The Independent, drew parallels between his character’s situation and his own experience as a 60-year-old actor. He expressed his understanding of Hal’s reluctance, stating, ‘I’m 60 years old and I’m well aware I’ve got another good 10 years of physical activity – I saw it immediately like that.’ He further explained that stepping out of acting would mean stepping out of his identity, a daunting prospect for both him and his character.

The actor also highlighted the humorous and fun aspects of this dynamic, with Hal constantly challenging John’s youth and lack of wisdom. Chandler particularly enjoyed a scene in the first episode where Hal, in a moment of danger, leaves John behind, which he described as a fun and engaging moment that drew him to the show.
