Suspect Nabbed for Fatal Livestream Shooting of Influencer in Mexico

POLICY WIRE — Mexico City, Mexico — Mexican officials have apprehended a suspect accused of fatally shooting an influencer during a live broadcast. The incident occurred on August 4 in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state.

Cesar Gastelum, boasting over 500,000 TikTok followers, was attacked while participating in a social media challenge dressed as a food delivery worker. The livestream captured a motorcycle driver firing a gun at Gastelum.

Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch revealed that the alleged perpetrator was found in Puebla, central Mexico. During the arrest, police faced an attack by three armed individuals, resulting in the death of one assailant.

Authorities seized three firearms, ammunition, and vehicles during the operation. Preliminary findings suggest Gastelum’s murder was connected to his social media posts referencing a criminal faction.

The ongoing conflict between factions of the Sinaloa Cartel has led to thousands of deaths or disappearances in the region. Culiacan is known for its ‘narco-culture,’ where social media influencers are often linked to criminal gangs.

This incident follows the murder of another influencer, Valeria Marquez, who was shot dead during a livestream in a beauty salon last year. Authorities arrested Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala in connection with Marquez’s murder and the killing of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo.

Influencers have faced threats and violence across Latin America. In Venezuela, an alleged accomplice was arrested for the murder of a TikTok influencer during a livestream.
