Prominent Archbishop Condemns Livestream of Nidal Hasan’s Firing Squad Execution
Archbishop urges Catholic soldiers to avoid firing squad duty as execution plans face scrutiny.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — A leading U.S. archbishop has spoken out against the planned livestream of a military firing squad execution, urging Catholic service members not to participate in the process.
Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who leads the Archdiocese for the Military Services, issued a statement Monday condemning the Pentagon’s decision to broadcast the execution of Nidal Hasan. He emphasized that any Catholic soldier assigned to the firing squad should seek exemption from the duty, calling it incompatible with church teachings.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, was convicted in 2009 for killing 13 people and wounding 32 at Fort Hood, Texas. His execution by firing squad is scheduled for December 3, and the military has announced plans to livestream the event. Broglio questioned the purpose of exposing the public to the execution, noting that it could tarnish the military’s global reputation.
