During a press briefing held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on August 5, 2024, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry gave a detailed account of the current situation in Pakistan and the country’s measures to counter digital terrorism and regional insecurity. The article explains his briefing that revealed the scale of the problem the country has, such as fake news, internal conflicts, and terrorism, and the military’s readiness to bring order to the country.
Lt Gen Chaudhry stressed the problem of digital terrorism which is characterized by fake news, fake photos, and propaganda that can destabilize Pakistan. He expressed his disappointment in the current laws saying that they were insufficient to address these problems. “The law is not taking its course against digital terrorism as it should,” Gen Chaudhry said, stressing that the military is willing to file a lawsuit against those who disseminate false information and try to create conflict between the military and citizens.
The DG ISPR also pointed out that unlike traditional threats, the internet is anonymous and accessible to anyone around the world making it challenging to counter threats from this domain. The military’s proactive approach is to prevent such campaigns that sow seeds of doubt and undermine the population’s confidence.
The situation in internal security of Pakistan has worsened due to both internal and external factors that have fueled regional conflict. Gen Chaudhry directly pointed towards Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) and referred to it as a front of terrorist organizations and criminal mafias. Protests that took place in Gwadar recently under the banner of the BYC were termed by Gen Chaudhry as attempts to malign the LEAs and sabotage developmental projects.
The military’s attention still remains more concentrated on the integrated districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where counter-terrorism operations are still intense. Lt Gen Chaudhry reiterated the government’s stance to eliminate terrorism and said that the operation will go on until the last militant is eliminated.
Gen Chaudhry went into details about the operation against terrorism, and said that during the last one year, security forces and law enforcement agencies have conducted 23622 IBOs out of which 2045 have been conducted in the last 15 days. These operations have led to neutralization of 24 terrorists. The DG ISPR further elaborated that more than hundred operations are conducted daily which shows how active the military is in its fight against terrorism and to bring peace in the affected areas.
In addition to security issues, Lt Gen Chaudhry elaborated on the military’s social responsibility in the provision of education and development especially in the less privileged areas. The army has opened 92 schools in Balochistan in which more than 19000 students are enrolled and scholarship programs have also been started for the local students. Furthermore, the military has provided medical facilities, constructed roads and bridges, and has opened schools and cadet colleges in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. Such measures are in line with the military’s overall approach of enhancing the quality of life and education in Pakistan.
Internationally, Gen Chaudhry reaffirmed Pakistan’s stand with the people of IIOJK and denounced human rights abuses and demographic alteration by India. He urged for the settlement of the Kashmir dispute in terms of the United Nations resolutions and the wishes of the people of Kashmir.
In reply to the foreign propaganda, Gen Chaudhry condemned the state and non-state actors’ conspiracy to spread negativity about Pakistan. He said that these entities have devoted a lot of efforts and money in building a story of insecurity and despair and are silent on human rights violations in Gaza for instance. “The army is fully aware of who is behind these foreign propaganda campaigns and why,” General Chaudhry said. He accused the international actors of hypocrisy and urged them to tell the truth about global affairs.
Thus, the press briefing of Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry gave a clear understanding of the internal security situation in Pakistan, the fight against digital terrorism, and the activities of the military in the fight against terrorism and development. His words stress the necessity of a united approach to address the fake news and internal turmoil and demonstrate the armed forces’ loyalty to the country’s welfare and development.
The briefing outlines a complex approach that includes enhancement of legal measures, enhancement of counter-terrorism activities, enhancement of educational and developmental activities, and consideration of regional and international issues. This approach demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to face the challenges of the contemporary security environment and provide security to its people and the region.
