National Unity vs. Human Rights: The Controversy Surrounding Mahrang Baloch and Baloch Separatism

Date:

Supporters of the Pakistani state argue that the activities of Baloch separatist activists, including human rights campaigns, might contribute to unrest in Balochistan, where there has been a longstanding insurgency for autonomy. They claim that individuals like Mahrang Baloch may be seen as having links to separatist groups that threaten Pakistan’s territorial integrity. Therefore, her activism could be interpreted as undermining national unity and stability. Some believe that certain Baloch separatists receive support from foreign adversaries (like India) who aim to destabilize Pakistan. Such trending activists could be unwittingly or knowingly working to further foreign interests, which is a threat to national sovereignty. The arrest of Baloch human rights activists is influenced by several factors, often involving complex political, social, and security dynamics. Some of the key reasons behind such arrests for instance includes that, Baloch activists may be breaking laws related to sedition, incitement, or spreading anti-state propaganda. Arresting individuals is seen as part of enforcing the rule of law and protecting national security, with a belief that Pakistan is upholding legal and constitutional frameworks.

The arrest of Baloch human rights activist Mahrang Baloch is a contentious issue, the debate centers on the balance between national security and individual rights. The Pakistani state, including both civilian and military authorities, often views arrests as a necessary action for maintaining order, while human rights advocates perceive such moves as a crackdown on dissent and a denial of fundamental freedoms. Such arrests are a violation of basic human rights and freedom of expression. Activists like Mahrang Baloch are often seen as advocating for the protection of Baloch people’s rights, especially in the face of military operations and alleged human rights abuses in the region. Proponents of the military’s stance argue that the Armed Forces are tasked with maintaining national security and safeguarding the integrity of the country. They assert that Baloch separatist movements can destabilize regions, and the military is simply fulfilling its duty to quell any insurgency or secessionist movements. The military often sees itself as a protector of the state against forces that threaten unity, including perceived agitators like Mahrang Baloch. Baloch insurgency is an ongoing internal security issue that requires decisive action, including the arrest of activists who may promote or glorify violence in the region.

Those involved in promoting separatist ideologies often encourage youth to join militant factions, which further escalate the situation. Any human rights advocacy is acceptable, as long as it doesn’t cross the line into acts of defiance or encourage disintegration of the country. If an activist like Mahrang Baloch is arrested, it’s not for simply voicing concerns, but for actions perceived as undermining the state’s security, which could be considered as a threat. The Jaffar Express, traveling from Quetta to Peshawar, was attacked by terrorists from the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). The assailants bombed the tracks and opened fire, resulting in casualties among passengers and the driver. This arrest occurred in the context of heightened tensions following the March 11 hijacking of the Jaffar Express train by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which led to numerous casualties. The demonstration escalated into violence on March 21, resulting in the deaths of three protesters. The following day, while protesting with the victims’ bodies, Mahrang Baloch and 16 other activists were detained.

Mahrang Baloch’s actions or rhetoric are seen as prioritizing personal or factional agendas, they may detract from the unity needed to push for the rights of all Baloch people. The Baloch subject, in the context of human rights, requires a united voice to advocate for equal treatment, political recognition, and justice. Corruption in the political sense often leads to the diversion of resources and attention from the real issues that need to be addressed. If Mahrang Baloch is involved in activities that exploit the movement for personal or political gain, it could harm the credibility of the Baloch cause. A focus on extremist actions or rhetoric might alienate the international community and human rights organizations that could otherwise advocate for Baloch rights. A fragmented or radicalized approach can lead to less diplomatic support, undermining efforts to improve the human rights situation in Balochistan.

Mahrang Baloch’s stance on Balochistan has been seen as aligned with the interests of external actors, including foreign governments or agencies that have an interest in the region’s geopolitical dynamics. For example, some believe that foreign powers may view a destabilized Balochistan as an opportunity to exert influence over the region, particularly given its strategic location near the Middle East, Afghanistan, and the energy-rich areas. Balochistan has historically been a region of international interest because of its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route. Some critics contend that Baloch advocacy figures like Baloch are being used by foreign elements to destabilize Pakistan’s internal stability, weaken its sovereignty, and create conditions that could enable foreign influence or intervention. Mahrang Baloch’s advocacy highlights the broader conflict in Balochistan, where the struggle for human rights and political autonomy is intertwined with complex geopolitical dynamics. Critics view her actions as contributing to a foreign-backed agenda that threatens Pakistan’s internal stability, while supporters see her as an advocate for marginalized communities seeking justice. The resolution of these tensions will likely require a nuanced approach that balances internal autonomy with national cohesion and development, rather than external influence. Pakistan’s government argues that the region’s challenges are better addressed through political dialogue, economic development, and social integration, rather than by foreign intervention or destabilization. the Pakistani perspective, advocating for Balochistan’s autonomy or independence, especially with external backing, can be seen as undermining national unity and creating divisions within the country.
