POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — A National Guardsman involved in President Trump’s initiative to reduce crime in Washington, D.C., has been charged with assault after reportedly pointing a firearm at a fellow service member.
Zion Mitchell, 21, from Macon, Georgia, was arrested earlier this month and faces charges including possession of a firearm during an assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the criminal complaint filed by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office in the District of Columbia’s Superior Court.

The alleged incident occurred on August 25 when Mitchell and a female colleague were in a black van near a Popeyes in Northeast Washington, D.C. The two reportedly argued over their hairstyles and adherence to Army regulations. The victim later told police she heard a “holster click” and believed Mitchell had opened his holster. She later discovered he had drawn his gun and pointed it at her, as confirmed by other witnesses in the van.
One witness described Mitchell as someone who frequently targets others and displays aggression, while another noted he had a history of threatening women. When questioned, Mitchell initially claimed the interaction was lighthearted but later admitted to pulling out his pistol and aiming it at the victim, according to the complaint. Mitchell is currently held without bond.
