Students in Albania clash with police during education and jobs protest. Tear gas and water cannons used as tensions escalate.
POLICY WIRE — Tirana, Albania — Albanian students clashed with police in the capital on Tuesday as protests over education and employment conditions turned violent. Demonstrators hurled bricks and concrete blocks at the Education Ministry, prompting law enforcement to deploy tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.
The demonstrations, which began at 2 p.m. local time, saw large groups of students gather along Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard before moving toward the Ministry of Education. The unrest spread across the country, with protesters blocking major roads and demanding better opportunities for young people.
Clashes also resulted in injuries to two journalists covering the event. Meanwhile, the Flamingo Revolution—a decentralized movement opposing the government—has continued to gain momentum. Protests against a planned luxury resort linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump, have now reached their 100th day, further fueling public discontent.
