POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Former Chelsea captain John Terry has openly conveyed his significant apprehension regarding the club’s trajectory and current predicament, following the recent dismissal of Liam Rosenior.
Terry, who contributes as a part-time mentor within the Chelsea academy, additionally confirmed that he had not been contacted to assist interim manager Calum McFarlane.
Leadership Turmoil at Stamford Bridge
The departure of Rosenior occurred merely three months into his six-year contract, at a time when Chelsea’s prospects for qualifying for the upcoming season’s Champions League appear increasingly dim. In the wake of Enzo Maresca’s earlier exit this campaign, Under-21s coach McFarlane is now tasked with leading the team until the season concludes, having previously overseen a draw against Manchester City.
“I sit here worrying tonight about what is going to happen with our football club,” Terry lamented on his TikTok account. “Looking at us needing a manager after the weekend, I’m not sure when ownership are going to make a decision and bring a new manager in.”
He questioned the club’s appeal to a top-tier manager given its current state, highlighting potential limitations on player acquisitions and the likelihood of needing to sell key players, a situation he described as inherently difficult. Terry also expressed pessimism about Chelsea’s participation in European football next season, though he hoped his prediction would be incorrect.

Fan Frustration and Player Focus
The legendary defender articulated profound frustration and, more significantly, worry, stating he senses the widespread anger and disappointment among Chelsea supporters. Despite the turbulent environment, Terry drew upon his extensive experience, having witnessed seventeen managerial changes during his tenure as Chelsea captain.
He urged the current squad to unite, concentrate solely on the upcoming weekend’s fixture against Leeds, and disregard external pressures. “What the players have to do is just get together and really focus on the weekend’s game and forget about all the noise around and everything,” he advised.
Terry acknowledged the challenging nature of the task but emphasized the players’ ability to block out distractions and focus on the immediate challenge. While acknowledging past cycles of club instability, he suggested that the future outlook for Chelsea might be less clear than in previous times.
The former captain had previously voiced his ‘frustration’ in February about not being considered for the interim management position following Maresca’s departure. He felt he ‘should have been a part’ of the caretaker team that faced Manchester City. Confirming his continued dedication to his academy responsibilities, Terry stated he would remain in his mentoring role and lend his full support to McFarlane and the team in their forthcoming matches.
The club faces significant challenges, including potential transfer market pressures, as articulated by Terry, which could impact its ability to rebuild effectively.
