Bollywood Actor Imran Khan Ordered to Leave India Following Political Protest
US citizen and Bollywood actor Imran Khan faces deportation from India after participating in a Mumbai protest against the Chief Election Commissioner.
POLICY WIRE — Mumbai, India — Indian authorities have issued a directive requiring Bollywood actor Imran Khan to depart the country by the end of October. The order follows allegations that the 43-year-old, who holds United States citizenship, violated national immigration regulations by engaging in a political demonstration.
The controversy stems from an October 10 rally in Mumbai organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). During the event, participants demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing concerns over voter list revisions that critics argue unfairly benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political party.
On the day of the protest, Khan posted an image to his Instagram account showing himself in the back of what appeared to be a police vehicle, accompanied by the caption, Apparently I’m going for a drive. He was seen posing with a victory sign in the photograph.
Following the demonstration, a formal complaint was lodged at a local Mumbai police station alleging that the actor had breached legal statutes. In response, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office—the federal agency tasked with monitoring foreign nationals—issued a notice mandating his exit from India by October 28.
Under existing Indian law, foreign nationals are prohibited from participating in political protests, a restriction that can lead to visa and immigration violations. Khan, a member of a prominent film family and nephew of actor Aamir Khan, gained fame for his roles in various Bollywood hits between 2008 and 2015 before stepping away from the industry.
As of Thursday, October 15, the actor had not provided a public response to requests for comment regarding the government’s directive.
