POLICY WIRE — East Lansing, USA — Michigan State has officially secured a significant talent from the transfer portal, announcing the commitment of towering center Anton Bonke to its basketball program.
The decision by the 7-foot-2, 270-pound athlete to join the Michigan State Spartans was verified by his agent, Scott Nichols, in a statement to The Detroit News on Wednesday. Bonke’s arrival is anticipated to provide an immediate and much-needed physical presence in the paint for games at the Breslin Center.
Bonke’s Performance and Professional Ambitions
During his last season with Charlotte, Bonke delivered strong performances, averaging 10.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He also showcased a developing range, successfully converting 13 of 38 attempts from beyond the arc, demonstrating his versatility on the court.
Currently, Bonke is in the process of exploring his opportunities in the NBA Draft, a strategic move that enables collegiate athletes to gauge professional interest while retaining their NCAA eligibility. This path is also being pursued by fellow Spartan, point guard Jeremy Fears Jr.

His agent, Nichols, expressed Bonke’s genuine excitement to become a part of the Spartans team, while also emphasizing that his client’s immediate and complete focus remains on the ongoing NBA Draft assessment.
Addressing Michigan State’s Frontcourt Depth
Bonke’s commitment is particularly critical given the team’s limited depth at the center position, with incoming freshman Ethan Taylor being the sole true center previously on scholarship. Last season, forward Jesse McCulloch provided some rotational minutes at center in 28 games during the team’s impressive run to the Sweet 16.
The Spartans faced significant gaps in their frontcourt following the graduation of key players, including stretch four Jaxon Kohler and center Carson Cooper, highlighting the urgent need for an experienced and impactful big man like Bonke.
Beyond his imposing physical frame, Bonke brings substantial collegiate experience to East Lansing. He is slated to commence his junior year, having previously started 32 out of 34 games during his impactful season at Charlotte. Prior to that, he made 16 appearances, including one start, as a freshman at Providence.
Bonke’s roots trace back to Vanuatu, an island nation situated in the South Pacific, positioned east of Australia, with a population of approximately 341,500 residents.
Recruitment Landscape and Roster Outlook
Michigan State diligently explored various options for centers in the transfer portal this offseason. Among their targets was Aiden Sherrell, a 6-foot-10 forward from Detroit capable of playing the five, who ultimately committed to Indiana. Another notable recruit, Franck Kepnang, a powerful big man from Washington who played alongside All-Freshman center Hannes Steinbach, also undertook an official visit to the university.
Bonke himself visited the campus last Saturday during Michigan State’s spring football showcase, reportedly finding the program and environment highly appealing. With Bonke’s addition, the Michigan State basketball roster now stands at 14 scholarship players for the upcoming season, with an additional spot recently becoming available due to the transfer declaration of combo guard Divine Ugochukwu.
