Hinojosa Targets Texas Latino Men with Sports-Centric Campaign to Challenge Abbott
Texas Democrat Gina Hinojosa launches a new campaign targeting Hispanic men through sports events to challenge Governor Greg Abbott in the gubernatorial race.
POLICY WIRE — AustinIN, Texas — With Election Day approaching, Democratic candidate for Texas governor Gina Hinojosa is focusing her efforts on a vital demographic in the Lone Star State: Hispanic men.
The Hinojosa campaign recently introduced an advertisement that contrasts her platform—which includes protecting public education, limiting data center growth, and cutting taxes—against the record of three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott. She claims the incumbent prioritizes the interests of large corporations and wealthy donors.
This move aligns with a wider Democratic strategy to connect with Latino men through community-based sports programming rather than relying solely on standard political commercials.
The strategy has seen success in a neighboring region recently. During his 2024 Senate run in Arizona, Democrat Ruben Gallego utilized boxing watch parties, rodeos, and barbecues to engage Latino voters.
Gallego managed to defeat Republican Kari Lake to become Arizona’s first- Latino U.S. senator, a feat achieved even though Donald Trump won the state by nearly six percentage points that same year.
Governor Abbott is also actively courting the Latino electorate. His team released a Spanish-language ad portraying Hinojosa as being too socially liberal for Texas.
Abbott’s press secretary, Eduardo Leal, stated last week that her policies do not align with the values of the Hispanic community, while the governor also points to his wife, Cecilia, as the state’s first Hispanic first lady.
Despite these efforts, the political leanings of this voting group are shifting. Hinojosa noted that Trump’s success in capturing Latino votes in Texas and the Valley stems from his message that the system is rigged. She argued that Democrats have historically been defending an indefensible system that works against the people.
Democrats remain optimistic that this trend may fluctuate. National data suggests a segment of Latino voters has moved away from Trump since 2024, and Texas strategists are encouraged by high turnout in Latino-heavy areas during recent primaries.
One strategist described the current mood of these voters as more monolithic and angry than he has ever witnessed.
However, Daniel Garza, who leads the conservative LIBRE Initiative, claims there is a lack of enthusiasm for Democrats in South Texas. He observed that many voters are unaware of the specific Democratic plan regarding lowering the cost of living.
As the race intensifies, Hinojosa is relying on the influence of one of Mexico’s most prominent athletes to reach voters in this high-stakes battleground.
