POLICY WIRE — Siena, Italy — The 2026 Siena Drone Photo Awards have unveiled a stunning collection of aerial images that offer a fresh perspective on our world.
Winning photographer George Steinmetz captured a remarkable bird’s-eye view of a tanker designed for transporting liquefied natural gas, earning him the top prize in the competition.
Each year, the Siena Drone Photo Awards highlight unique landscapes and human stories that are often unseen from ground level. This year’s winners include images of ship recycling processes, intricate rug patterns, and far-out natural landscapes.
The winning tanker image showcases the intricate and labor-intensive process of ship recycling, which can take up to a year with a crew of 60 men using blowtorches and winches to dismantle the vessel.
The Drone Photo Awards aim to celebrate the world seen from above, offering a new vantage point on the environments and activities that shape our planet.
