Audi Restructures China Operations: Splitting Four-Ring and AUDI Brands
Audi is splitting its Chinese joint ventures between the traditional four-ring logo and a new all-caps AUDI brand to boost electric vehicle sales.
POLICY WIRE — Shanghai/Beijing, China — Audi has officially bifurcated its branding strategy across its Chinese joint ventures, assigning distinct identities to its two local partners. Under the new arrangement, SAIC Audi will exclusively utilize the all-caps AUDI name, while FAW Audi maintains the rights to the company’s iconic four-ring logo.
The Volkswagen subsidiary announced the dual-brand strategy via its WeChat account on Monday, confirming long-standing industry speculation. This restructuring aims to sharpen the company’s focus on intelligent mobility and the rapidly expanding electric vehicle sector.
Under the updated agreements, China FAW will continue to manage the four-ring brand, overseeing both combustion-engine vehicles and new energy vehicles (NEVs). Conversely, SAIC Audi will concentrate its efforts on the AUDI brand, which is positioned as an electric-only marque specifically designed for the Chinese market.
The AUDI brand, which was unveiled in November 2024, operates independently of the traditional four-ring lineup. These vehicles are built on a jointly developed Advanced Digitized Platform, intended to cater to local consumer preferences.
This strategic shift arrives as the German automaker attempts to reverse a significant downturn in its Chinese operations. The company reported a 19% decline in deliveries during the first half of the year, alongside a sharp 74% drop in profits, with earnings falling from 279 million to 73 million euros year-over-year.
While the division of labor is now official, SAIC Audi retains the authorization to sell four-ring models until the conclusion of 2027. This transition marks a pivotal moment for the brand as it seeks to regain market share in the world’s largest automotive landscape.
