China’s AI Market Meltdown: $480 Billion Vaporized as Tech Bubble Bursts
China's AI and semiconductor stocks crash, wiping out $480 billion in value. Explore the market fallout, regulatory shifts, and investor sentiment today.
POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — The artificial intelligence investment frenzy in China has abruptly ended, with a sharp market correction wiping out approximately $480 billion in value. The mainland STAR50 index, which tracks leading AI and semiconductor firms, has plummeted 40% in under four months, signaling a significant downturn for the nation’s tech sector.
This collapse has effectively halted a two-year rally that was fueled by economic stimulus promises. Beijing’s ambition to foster a stable, long-term bull market has been disrupted, with the broader blue-chip index falling roughly 20% from its June peak. Beijing-based fund manager Dong Baozhen noted that the market had evolved into a speculative crazy bull, and now we see the bubble bursting.
The downturn is particularly severe for retail investors, who dominate the market. Goldman Sachs reports that AI-related stocks account for 42% of China’s market capitalization and 57% of turnover across mainland A-shares and Hong Kong H-shares. High-profile companies like Unitree, MetaX Integrated Circuits, and Moore Threads Technology have seen their valuations cut in half since their respective peaks.
Market participants point to a combination of factors driving the selloff, including high valuations, tax obligations, and the looming threat of international bans on Chinese data center equipment. Shares in optical component manufacturers Zhongji Innolight and Eoptolink Technology have dropped nearly 60% from their summer highs as Washington considers further restrictions.
Despite the volatility, some analysts suggest the correction could be a necessary step for long-term market health. While the China Securities Regulatory Commission has been reviewing capital market improvements, experts like Leo Wang of Qianchuang Capital argue that overemphasizing tech weighting in indexes created a severe bubble and a drain on other sectors.
Investors remain cautious as they look for lower valuations or alternative sectors. Fund manager Wang Zhuo of Shanghai Zhuozhu Investment Management warned that chipmakers and AI suppliers will eventually end up in a price war, stating, there is no exception. All bubbles inevitably burst.
