POLICY WIRE — Oklahoma City, USA — Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams was transported off the court on a stretcher during the final minutes of Sunday’s 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers after sustaining a severe leg injury.
The incident occurred as Williams attempted a dunk and was fouled by Kris Dunn. Upon landing, his left leg buckled beneath him, resulting in an unnatural bend to his foot that prompted team medical staff to immediately shield the area with a towel.
Teammates, including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, were visibly shaken by the scene, with several players kneeling on the court as medical personnel attended to the injured star. As he was being wheeled away, Williams offered a thumbs-up to the crowd, which responded with a standing ovation and chants of his nickname, J-Dub.
Referees assessed a flagrant 1 foul against Dunn for the contact. Gilgeous-Alexander, who led the Thunder with 34 points, stepped in to shoot the resulting free throws on behalf of his teammate.
Following the game, an emotional Gilgeous-Alexander expressed his sympathy for his longtime teammate, stating, I just feel bad for him. Nothing more than that. He later added that he remains confident in Williams’ ability to recover, describing him as a warrior who is well-equipped to handle the setback.
Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault confirmed there were no immediate updates regarding the severity of the injury. “Those are tough, man. We’re not doing great,” Daigneault remarked during his postgame press conference. “that is tough on the guys.”
The team also faced additional injury concerns during the contest, with Cason Wallace and Jaylin Williams both exiting the game early. Daigneault indicated that further information on their conditions would be provided on Monday.
Williams, who was limited to 33 games last season due to various health issues including a hamstring injury, now faces another period of uncertainty. Despite the history of injuries, Gilgeous-Alexander remains optimistic, telling reporters, I have no doubt in my mind that he’ll be back and be better than he was before.
