Trump Targets Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan Rally as Midterm Tensions Escalate
President Trump attacks Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed at a Port Huron rally, while Democrats and Bernie Sanders push back ahead of the Nov. 3 election.
POLICY WIRE — Port Huron, USA — President Trump campaigned in Michigan on Sunday, rallying support for Republican candidates just days before the November 3 midterm elections. Speaking at McMorran Place, the president emphasized the state’s history, crediting its development to American patriots who contributed their blood, sweat and tears.
During the event, Trump endorsed Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate, describing him as one of the most respected figures in Washington. He simultaneously launched a sharp attack against Rogers’ Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, labeling him a jihadist and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.
El-Sayed has previously addressed such accusations. During a town hall in Caro, Michigan, earlier this month, he explicitly disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood when questioned by an attendee. The two Senate candidates recently concluded their final debate on Wednesday in Southfield.
The president also used the platform to back gubernatorial candidate John James, asserting that James would prioritize job creation and cost reduction. Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel criticized the visit, stating that by aligning with Trump, Rogers and James are fully endorsing a toxic agenda.
The political landscape in Michigan remains highly charged. Former President Barack Obama visited Detroit on Saturday to support El-Sayed, gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson, and other Democratic candidates.
On Sunday evening, Senator Bernie Sanders joined El-Sayed at a rally at the DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids. Sanders accused Trump and his allies of utilizing Islamophobia to distract from critical issues like health care, housing, and income inequality, claiming they rely on fomenting hatred and divisiveness.
The campaign trail continues this week, with Vice President JD Vance scheduled to appear at CHI Aviation in Howell, Michigan, on Tuesday to support the Republican ticket.
