Rahul Gandhi Acquitted in 2018 Defamation Case by Sultanpur Court
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been acquitted by a special MP-MLA court in a 2018 criminal defamation case involving remarks against Amit Shah.
POLICY WIRE — Sultanpur, India — A special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur has acquitted Rahul Gandhi, the leader of India’s main opposition Congress party, in a long-standing criminal defamation case.
The legal proceedings concluded on Monday, effectively ending an eight-year battle stemming from comments Gandhi made in 2018. The remarks were directed at Amit Shah, who served as the BJP national president at the time.
The case originated from a complaint filed by local BJP leader Vijay Mishra, who alleged that Gandhi made derogatory statements regarding Shah during a rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.
Rahul Gandhi, who currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and represents the Raebareli constituency, was present in the courtroom to hear the verdict delivered by the Uttar Pradesh-based court.
