AG Todd Blanche Defends Alaska Voting Lawsuit and DOJ Independence on Face the Nation
Attorney General Todd Blanche addresses the DOJ lawsuit in Alaska, election integrity, and administration investigations on Face the Nation.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — Attorney General Todd Blanche appeared on Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan on Oct. 25, 2026, to discuss Department of Justice election oversight and recent federal legal actions.
Brennan questioned Blanche about comments from his colleague Harmeet Dhillon regarding election certification, to which Blanche responded that the Justice Department prefers not to intervene in elections unless required by facts and the law.
The discussion turned to a preemptive federal lawsuit filed in Alaska to block the certification of results if incumbent Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan loses to challenger Dan J. Sullivan. Blanche defended the lawsuit, stating it aims to address potential voter confusion caused by the second candidate and enforce federal law where the Alaska Supreme Court did not consider it.
Brennan noted that the Alaska Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling finding no preponderance of evidence that the challenger sought to confuse voters, utilizing the state’s ranked-choice voting system. Blanche disputed this characterization, emphasizing that the head of the Alaska election system acknowledged potential voter confusion.
When pressed on President Trump’s on-camera remark claiming responsibility for the lawsuit, Blanche declined to discuss private communications with the president. He maintained that the Civil Rights Unit within the Justice Department independently researched and drafted the filing following months of concerns.
The interview also touched on reported Justice Department inquiries into former DHS official Corey Lewandowski regarding financial gain allegations. Blanche declined to comment on leaks or sources but voiced full agreement with President Trump’s statement that administration officials must act with honesty and integrity.
Finally, Blanche addressed hypothetical scenarios regarding congressional subpoenas and potential investigations by Democrats, confirming that the administration complies with subpoenas and investigates crimes if they occur.
