UK Police Confirm Handling of 2019 Letter Regarding Thomas Markle Sr.
London police confirm they received a 2019 letter regarding Thomas Markle Sr. but did not share it with other agencies amid new child abuse image claims.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The Metropolitan Police confirmed on Saturday that they received a letter in January 2019 detailing allegations of misconduct against Thomas Markle Sr., the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. While authorities acknowledged passing the information to the Duchess, they stated that the details were not shared with any other law enforcement agencies.
The disclosure follows a statement from the Duchess of Sussex on Friday, in which she expressed deep distress over reports that a collection of child sexual abuse images had been discovered at a former residence of her father in the Philippines. The allegations surfaced after a British tabloid reported that Thomas Markle Jr. found the materials while clearing out the property.
In response to the unfolding situation, the Metropolitan Police announced they are currently reviewing their internal handling of the 2019 correspondence. The force is also evaluating whether the matter requires a formal referral to the police watchdog.
Meanwhile, international investigations are underway. Melvin Matibag, director of the National Bureau of Investigation in the Philippines, confirmed that the FBI has requested assistance regarding the claims. Additionally, Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated that local national police are actively investigating the allegations, which Thomas Markle Sr. has denied.
