At Least 40 Killed in Violent Attack on Nigerian Farming Community
At least 40 people were killed in a brutal attack on a Christian farming community in Nigeria. President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate investigation.
POLICY WIRE — Abuja, Nigeria — At least 40 individuals lost their lives during a violent assault on a Christian farming community in north-central Nigeria, according to statements from the nation’s president on Monday.
President Bola Tinubu confirmed the casualties following the late Sunday night raid. Authorities believe the perpetrators were Muslim gunmen, suspected to be herders, marking another escalation in the persistent wave of violence currently plaguing the West African nation.
In response to the tragedy, President Tinubu has officially ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. This attack follows a separate report from Amnesty International, which noted that gunmen killed at least 40 people in a village located in Nigeria’s northeastern Taraba state on Friday afternoon.
The security situation in the region remains dire, with Amnesty International highlighting a broader pattern of instability. Data indicates that over 10,217 people have been killed in the two years since the current government assumed power, including 6,896 deaths in Benue and 2,630 in Plateau.
Further reports of violence continue to emerge across the country. Local authorities in Adamawa state recently reported that gunmen killed at least 29 people during an hours-long assault that involved the burning of homes and places of worship.
