Romania Blames Russia for Fatal Black Sea Drone Strike on Cargo Ship
Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemns Russia following a deadly drone strike on a cargo ship in the Black Sea, leaving one dead and three missing.
POLICY WIRE — Bucharest, Romania — President Nicușor Dan has formally accused Russia of intensifying its aggression against the eastern flank of NATO. This declaration follows a devastating drone strike that resulted in the sinking of a cargo vessel off the Romanian Black Sea coast.
The maritime incident has claimed the life of at least one sailor, while three other crew members remain missing. The attack marks a significant escalation in regional tensions, as the Black Sea continues to serve as a critical shipping corridor for Ukraine.
Security concerns have mounted throughout the month as multiple commercial vessels have been targeted. In a separate incident occurring near the territorial waters of Romania and Bulgaria, two chemical tankers, the Wine Trader and the Yara J, were struck by drones and set ablaze.
Rescue operations were launched following the tanker attacks to locate seven missing sailors. A NATO military source confirmed to Reuters that the drones responsible for the fires on the two tankers originated from Russia.
The frequency of these strikes against commercial shipping has alarmed NATO members, who fear for the safety of vital maritime trade routes. Romania has explicitly linked the recent surge in drone activity against civilian vessels to Russian military operations.
