POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — A violent drive-by shooting in a Parisian suburb on Friday resulted in the death of one individual and left four others injured, according to French authorities.
Police successfully apprehended a suspect near the town of Trappes, placing the individual into custody while the investigation into the motive behind the attack continues.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that all available resources from security forces and judicial authorities have been fully mobilized to address the incident. Furthermore, the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed it is actively monitoring the situation.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh reported to BFM TV that the assailant appeared to target passersby indiscriminately, noting that the shooter opened fire in multiple locations, including a playground. Rabeh described the survival of others as a miracle and identified the deceased victim as being of African origin, while one of the critically wounded individuals is of North African descent.
The attack occurred as France prepares for widespread protests against the high cost of living scheduled for Saturday. The government has increased security deployments across the country to prevent a recurrence of the violent unrest that took place last week.
