BBC Confirms Deep Cuts and Channel Closures to Hit £500M Savings Goal
The BBC announces channel closures and up to 2,000 job cuts in a major restructuring plan to tackle severe financial pressures and save £500m.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The BBC has officially detailed a sweeping restructuring strategy aimed at slashing £500m by the year 2028 to counter severe financial pressures.
As part of the initial phase, the broadcaster confirmed the termination of linear broadcast channels BBC Three, BBC Scotland, and BBC Radio 4 Extra in the spring of 2027.
The corporation also revealed plans to eliminate 550 positions across news, regional nations, and television and radio content during this first rollout.
Altogether, the network expects to shed between 1,800 and 2,000 roles, affecting nearly one out of every ten employees on staff.
The measures announced account for approximately £160m toward the broader £500m financial target slated over the upcoming three-year timeframe.
Concurrently, the elimination of local specialist correspondent positions has drawn sharp union warnings that the organization faces a dangerous downward trajectory of continuous cutbacks.
