UK Expands Military Support for Saudi Arabia with Defensive Air Patrols
Britain is deploying Royal Air Force jets for defensive air patrols over Saudi Arabia to counter Houthi missile and drone threats amid regional instability.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The British government announced on Tuesday a significant expansion of its military assistance to Saudi Arabia, confirming that Royal Air Force (RAF) jets will now conduct defensive air patrols to counter threats from Houthi rebels.
Defense Secretary Wes Streeting stated that the Typhoon aircraft are tasked with intercepting missiles and drones aimed at Saudi cities, civilian populations, and critical infrastructure. While these defensive operations will target aerial threats, Streeting clarified that British forces will not engage in offensive strikes against Houthi positions on the ground.
In addition to the air patrols, the United Kingdom is deploying a military transport plane and a contingent of military advisers to the kingdom. This move builds upon a previous commitment to provide in-air refueling for Saudi operations, an initiative that has been extended for another 90 days.
The escalation follows a series of Houthi-led attacks, including multiple strikes on Riyadh’s international airport earlier this month. Despite the increased military presence, Streeting emphasized that there is no long-term military solution to the conflict in Yemen and reiterated support for a United Nations-led political process to achieve lasting peace.
