Italy to Expand Police Arrest Powers Following Violent Weekend Riots
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni moves to bolster police authority and deploy troops after violent anti-government protests erupt across major Italian cities.
POLICY WIRE — Rome, Italy — Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to implement aggressive new security measures this Tuesday, aiming to grant law enforcement expanded arrest powers following a series of violent urban riots that disrupted major cities over the weekend.
The legislative push comes in the wake of widespread civil disobedience, which saw demonstrators engage in clashes with police, loot local businesses, and vandalize property. The government’s response includes a decree that allows authorities to detain protesters for up to 12 hours without formal charges, while also lowering the legal threshold for police and citizens to claim self-defense.
Tensions reached a breaking point during a hard-left rally in Turin, where more than 100 police officers sustained injuries and nearly 30 individuals were taken into custody. In response to the escalating instability, the government has ordered the deployment of 500 soldiers to Milan to maintain order.
The proposed security overhaul has drawn immediate fire from opposition parties and various civil-rights organizations, who argue the measures are overly restrictive. Prime Minister Meloni, however, has vowed a firm response from the state to curb the unrest, which has also impacted cities including Bologna.
